The Rwanda national soccer team has been among the weaker sides in African football. Although they had been making unsuccessful attempts to qualify for the African Cup Nations, they managed to qualify in 2004 although they were eliminated in the first Round, they managed to beat former champions, Democratic Republic of Congo and forced a draw, holding Guinea and keeping them at bay.
They also participate in the CECAFA Cup in which they have managed to reach the finals consecutively twice in 2010 and 2012,only to be beaten by their good neighbors(call them friends if you wish) Uganda in both finals, a regional tournament involving east and central African national teams only. Rwanda's international success came in this competition when the country's 'B' team defeated Kenya in the final.
The Rwandan Premier League is Rwanda’s club football competition, the most successful club here is APR FC. The Rwandan Cup is the main knock-out competition, with Rayon Sports FC as its “big boy”. Rwandan sides have enjoyed some success in the regional Kagame Inter-Club Cup, with Rayon Sport taking the title in 1998, APR FC in 2005 and 2007 and ATRACO FC in 2009.
